I am currently interested in learning and using the object-oriented scripting language Python. For this we turn to O'Reilly books.

Learning Python,

by Mark Lutz, David Ascher, Frank Willison (Editor)

O'Reilly and Associates

366 pages

This book is really a pretty basic introduction and doesn't assume much, if any, programming experience. It also doesn't explore many of the features that have made Python so popular, like the C interface.

Programming Python

A Nutshell Handbook

by Mark Lutz

900 pages

This is kind of the K& R of Python programming and this and the Python tutorial on the Python web site have been the most common tools for learning Python for most people.

Python: Pocket Reference

by Mark Lutz, Gigi Estabrook (Editor)

75 pages

This handy reference is not going to teach you how to program in Python, but it will make looking up things that you forgot a little easier. And it just might help you write better code as well. The last section is a page on "Python Idioms and Hints," including: You should always say "spam" and "eggs" instead of "foo" and "bar" in Python examples.
